I tend to follow the Search Engine Watch blog, Since it tends to be relevant to my work. This article resonated well with my own views on the subject.I agree with a lot of the viewpoints regarding totals and performance. Google has been a driving force in simplifying user interfaces in this area, but I still believe there is room for improvement.
